About the Program

About:

Adventure through Guatemala and genuinely connect with the locals while working alongside them to strengthen their communities. You will experience their culture and traditions firsthand — not as an outsider, but as a friend. This Guatemala Impact Adventure with Lake View Journeys is a perfect blend of culture, impact, and adventure. You will explore the land of volcanos, the pacific coast, Lake Atitlán and colonial Antigua

An impact adventure is the best of both worlds, an incredible travel adventure combined with an impactful service project. During a portion of your trip, you will go off the beaten path to places where we have partnerships with local communities. During this time you will work alongside the community to help them gain access to important resources.  Don’t worry, no specific skills are needed to partake in the project, just a big heart, and a positive attitude!

There will be two groups for the trip:

Group A:
16 students, 3 parent chaperones, 1 teacher chaperone

Shad Qudsi — Executive Director, WellKind Guatemala

Shad is a passionate farmer, designer, and permaculturalist. He has lived and worked in Tzununa, Guatemala, for the past 12 years, where he and his wife founded Atitlan Organics, a permaculture-inspired organic farm. He believes that humans can live harmoniously on the planet and meet all their needs while actually enhancing the local and global ecology. After spending years practicing regenerative food production, Shad began partnering with a wide range of local farmers and community members. Shad’s current role as Program Director of WellKind Guatemala enables him to build community-driven, permaculture-inspired solutions to food security, climate change, and economic disparity.

What will I do?

First, you will learn about the community, their needs, and the project you will be supporting.

You will work in native seed collection gathering seeds from local forests on a small hike that we will take, these seeds will be used in a local native tree nursery. The goal of this is to reproduce rare/ endangered species of trees that will be used in Wellkind’s reforestation efforts.

Get your hands dirty and plant trees with kids from the local school of Tzanchaj.

You will have free time to play soccer and hang with the kids when we are done with the reforestation activity.

Meet some of the local conservation leaders and forest rangers of Santiago Atitlan for a Q&A with Indigenous environmentalists who are making a difference in the day to day.

Where will I stay?

You will stay in Santiago, a quaint lake-side town on the shores of Lake Atitlan. You will be housed in comfortable accommodations, in bunk-style rooms with multiple other travelers.

What will I eat?

You eat breakfast at the hotel or on the drive over to the project site. Lunch will be provided.

What’s My Impact?

Your impact expands far beyond the scope of the specific impact project you work on. Each project completed will empower the communities to improve their quality of life and embolden them to plan for a brighter future. There is no doubt the things you learn during this process will highlight the common thread that connects us all and change your life forever.
