Through immersive travel and hands-on service—supporting education and reforestation in rural Guatemala—students will deepen their understanding of global challenges while making a real, lasting difference in the lives of others.

About:

Travel through Belize and Guatemala on a transformative adventure that blends cultural discovery, community service, and outdoor exploration. From the remote southern coast of Belize to the lush riverways of Rio Dulce and the ancient Maya ruins of Tikal, you’ll experience the region’s natural beauty and cultural richness in a way few travelers ever do.

This journey isn’t just about seeing new places—it’s about contributing meaningfully to them. Through a partnership with a local NGO, you’ll work directly with local students and educators to help improve rural school infrastructure and participate in native tree-planting efforts to support ecological restoration. No prior skills are required—just a spirit of curiosity, compassion, and collaboration.

There will be two groups for the trip:

Group A:
16 students, 3 parent chaperones, 1 teacher chaperone
Group B: 16 students, 3 parent chaperones, 1 teacher chaperone

Groups will be chosen on a first come first serve basis!

Impact

The central part of a Vivid Roots Impact Adventure is the “Impact” portion of the trip. For this trip, you will be working with Casa Guatemala, an established organization that serves multiple communities around Rio Dulce. We will visit their campus, meet with the community members, and learn about the complex issues that they face.

Your funding will help a specific impact project which you will be intricately involved with. The difference you will make will be tangible, impactful, and lifechanging for all the beneficiaries.

What's Included:

Flights

You will be flying with the group to and from Belize City (BOI to BZE)

Accommodations: 8 Nights Hotels

Safe, clean, and comfortable lodging in Punta Gorda, Rio Dulce, Flores, San Ignacio, and Belize City. Shared rooms (3–6 per room), with variations based on location. Each traveler will have their own bed. 

Meals

17 of 24 meals are included

Dietary restrictions? No worries, we can accommodate most preferences!

You will be on your own for a few meals where you can explore local cuisine with recommendations from your guides. Meals in Guatemala cost $8 – $12.

You will want to budget $65-$95 for food.

Transportation

All group transportation is included. Private passenger vans and busses (with A/C) for long journey’s but you will also be in trucks, boats and maybe even a tuk-tuk!

Guides

The team at Somos is world-class. Your group will have a lead Adventure Guide and additional local guides for specific adventures.

Additional Things To Think About

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is required for all trips. Policies start around $75. (Don’t worry, the tour operator Somos Travel will help you with this )

 

Payment

To save your spot on the trip a $500 Deposit is required.  Payment plans are available.

If payment is a challenge, some guests choose to fundraise for their trip which is super easy with our guest software WeTravel. We can help advise students on how to fundraise.

Impact Project Donation

To pay for the materials for the project you will work on, we ask that each guest donates or fundraises $250.

    Day 1: Arrival in Belize City ➝ Travel to Punta Gorda

    Arrive in Belize City (morning or early afternoon recommended), meet your guides, and begin a scenic drive through southern Belize to the coastal town of Punta Gorda. After settling into your accommodations, enjoy a welcome dinner at a local restaurant and take part in a cultural activity or orientation to kick off the trip.

    Day 2: Punta Gorda ➝ Rio Dulce (via boat) + Canyon Boat Tour

    After breakfast, depart by boat across the Belize-Guatemala border into Rio Dulce, a lush river town in eastern Guatemala. In the afternoon, embark on a guided boat tour through the stunning Rio Dulce Canyon, with time for swimming or short jungle walks. Enjoy the evening to relax on the dock or explore nearby.

    Day 3: Rio Dulce – Community Service Day 1

    Begin your volunteer work with a full-day service project supporting a local NGO, focused on sustainability, education, and development. You’ll work alongside local leaders and peers on meaningful tasks while learning about community life in the region.

    Day 4: Rio Dulce – Community Service Day 2

    Continue your hands-on work at the service site, deepening your understanding of local challenges and the positive impact of community-led initiatives. You’ll also have a chance to reflect and connect more personally with local students and staff.

    Day 5: Rio Dulce ➝ Finca Paraíso Hot Springs ➝ Travel to Flores

    After breakfast, visit the beautiful Finca Paraíso hot springs, where a warm waterfall cascades into a natural pool—perfect for swimming and relaxing. Later, transfer to Flores, a colorful island town in the Petén region, and settle in for a chill evening on the lake.

    Day 6: Tikal Tour + Explore Flores Island

    Depart early for a guided tour of Tikal National Park, home to ancient Mayan pyramids and temples hidden in the jungle. Return to Flores by mid-afternoon and spend your evening exploring shops, lakeside cafes, and local art galleries.

    Day 7: Travel to San Ignacio, Belize

    After breakfast, journey across the border back into Belize and continue to the lively town of San Ignacio, known for its rich culture and outdoor adventures. Settle in and enjoy free time to explore or relax.

    Day 8: Optional Cave Tubing ➝ Travel to Belize City

    After breakfast, those who choose the optional cave tubing adventure will stop on the way to Belize City for a guided float through jungle caves (not included in program cost). Those not participating will travel directly to Belize City for extra free time.

    The full group will reunite in the afternoon for your final night together.

    Day 9: Departure Day – Belize City ➝ Flights Home

    Wrap up your trip with a final breakfast and transfer to the airport for your flight home. Depart with new friends, unforgettable memories, and a fresh perspective on global citizenship and culture.

      Overview:

      In 2026, we’ll travel to Belize and Guatemala to support Casa Guatemala, a nonprofit organization providing education, nutrition, health care, and safe housing for vulnerable children in rural Guatemala. Established during the civil war in 1977, Casa Guatemala now serves over 300 children annually from 30+ surrounding Mayan villages.

      Intro to the NGO We Will Support

      Casa Guatemala’s mission is to provide quality education, healthy meals, and essential health services in a safe, nurturing environment. Their vision is to empower children to become leaders in their communities through education, job training, and self-sufficiency projects such as their farm, hotel, and butcher shop.

      What will I do?

      • Help with educational activities, arts, sports, and basic English language practice.
      • Assist in agricultural projects at the farm, such as planting, harvesting, and animal care.
      • Support daily operations like meal preparation, maintenance, or health education workshops.
      • Engage with local children through play, tutoring, or community events.

      Where will I stay?

      You’ll stay at Hotel Backpackers in Rio Dulce, Casa Guatemala’s social enterprise hotel. This hotel helps fund the NGO’s programs and offers comfortable accommodation right on the river.

      What will I eat?

      Enjoy healthy, local meals prepared at the hotel, with options reflecting Guatemalan cuisine and international flavors. Dietary needs can be accommodated.

      What’s My Impact?

      By volunteering with Casa Guatemala, you’ll help provide critical educational support, improve nutrition, enhance health outcomes, and contribute to the organization’s long-term sustainability. Every task—from working on the farm to playing with the children—helps strengthen a community working toward a brighter, self-sufficient future.
